The Fred Harvey Libraries
After 20 years as a librarian and another 20 as a professor of library science and library historian, Suzanne Stauffer has moved on to a third career as a mystery novelist. When not writing, she can be found reading, baking, gardening, and binging t.v. westerns. She currently lives in Albuquerque with her Australian husband and brown and white spotted rat terrier dog, Treme. Her debut novel, Fried Chicken Castañeda, was published by Artemesia Publishing in May 2025 and won the Bronze Medal in Mystery/Crime/Detection of CIPA EVVY and the New Mexico Book Award for Cozy Mystery.
Fred Harvey Publishing and Bookstores : Most of us know about the Fred Harvey Company restaurants, hotels, Santa Fe Railroad dining cars, and even the Indian Detours, but most of us are not aware of their publishing arm and their bookstores and newsstands. This presentation will give an overview of the history of their publishing efforts and their bookstores and newsstands found in train stations along the Santa Fe line from Chicago through California — and even east to Cleveland.
