Celebrate New Mexico Railroad Days At Wheels Museum!
Learn how and when the railroad came to New Mexico, how rail transportation helped Albuquerque grow into a vibrant city. Learn about the many countries where men came from to work on the railroad and learn what jobs women had at the rail yard.
When the rail yard was operational, there were over 400 types of jobs. Many workers were employed as laborers. Others became apprentices and learned skills such as blacksmiths, boilermakers, machinists, and mechanics- which were physically challenging occupations. Other jobs were agents, bookkeepers, engineers, conductors, clerks, crane operators, red caps, porters, secretaries, straw bosses, iron moulders, foundry hands, flagmen, firemen and more.
Wheels Museum began 30 years ago to save the iconic steam locomotive repair shops and the rail yard of the Santa Fe railroad. The museum is located in the rail yard’s old store room.
