John Taylor – Civil War in New Mexico
John is one of WHEELS most popular speakers. In the winter and spring of 1862, a brigade of about 2,800 troops invaded the New Mexico Territory hoping to capture it and much of the Western United States for Jefferson Davis and the Confederacy. They met Union forces in two battles – Valverde and Glorieta Pass, as well as at skirmishes in Albuquerque and Peralta.
John Taylor will cover this campaign and its importance in the Civil War. The lecture will include detailed descriptions of the rationale for the invasion, the battles and their outcomes, and the long-term impact of the invasion.
